"I juxtapose porcelain with graffiti in the hopes that we can start to see how different cultural histories can work together.” —Roberto Lugo

Roberto Lugo combines graffiti-style writing, decorative patterns, and portraits of historical and contemporary figures on the surface of his pots. Lugo created these works—featuring two notable Arkansans—for Crystal Bridges.

Born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915–1975) transformed American music as an acclaimed singer and recording artist. She blended gospel, blues rhythm, and jazz, helping to forge the development of rock and roll. Scottie Pippen (b. 1965) was raised in Hamburg, Arkansas, and played basketball for the University of Central Arkansas. He went on to play for the Chicago Bulls and the “Dream Team,” the 1992 US Olympic men’s basketball team, which is iconic in sports history.
