Demons, Xochiquetzal ‘Flower Quetzal Feather,’ p95
Martine Gutierrez reimagines Xōchiquetzal—the Aztec Goddess of youthful beauty, fertility, crafts, and female sexuality—for a twenty-first-century audience. Positioned against a golden backdrop with elaborate hair and costuming, Xōchiquetzal captivates the viewer with her gaze. The decorative motifs on the artist-embellished frame complement the ornamentation of the deity’s costume, while her hand gestures are reminiscent of poses in fashion magazines. Through this updated interpretation, Gutierrez demonstrates how a religious mythological icon can still express the multi-dimensionality of women today.
