Nature Weekends

People walking on trails with waterfall

This summer, we want you to get out of the museum—and into something wild.

Rediscover the beauty and wonder of the natural state as we highlight some of the fun and fascinating nature programs here at Crystal Bridges. Each month, we’ll be bringing some of the best educators, films, naturalists, and artists in Northwest Arkansas to the museum grounds for a nature-themed weekend that the whole family is sure to enjoy.

Three Months, Three Themes

Each weekend will be built around a key part of the natural world found here at the museum. Come to all three to get a new understanding of what makes our part of North America special!

September 17 – 19: Edible Gardens

It’s National Mushroom month, but there’s more to munch on our grounds than fungi—so why not come explore and feast on some outdoor fun? From floral cookie decorating to making your own herbal tea blends, from film screenings to garden parties, we have a veritable smorgasbord of nature-themed programming on offer this month.

Kick-off the weekend on Friday, September 18 with an evening of Floral Cookie Decorating with Art by the Glass, or discover the surprising power of mushrooms in a screening of Fantastic Fungi.

Then, on Saturday, come learn about the uses and flavors of some of the garden’s most famous denizens: herbs! In the morning, we’ll be exploring how the herbs of Arkansas can be a vital part of any healthy home. Then, in the afternoon, come join the tea masters from the Savoy Tea Company as we learn how different herbs come together to make your favorite cuppa, and even make a custom blend of your own design!

Finally, wrap up your weekend with a perennial favorite—Garden Party! Back by popular demand, this Sunday extravaganza of creative outdoor fun features artmaking, music, snacks, and more all across the South Lawn and the museum grounds. Fun for all ages, Garden Party promises to be a feast for the senses and a perfect way to close out our summer Nature Weekend season. We hope to see you there!

August 21 – 22: Water

It’s National Water Quality Month, and in celebration, we’re bringing together an ocean’s worth of water-themed activities. From exploring water engineering to painting with watercolors, we’re looking at all the ways that wonderful wet stuff helps make the world go round.

Stop by Saturday, August 21 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. to meet our Nature Partners and pick up a free water-loving plant to take home. Then, join us at 10:30 a.m. for a Discover the Grounds workshop about the noisiest neighbors of the ponds of Arkansas: singing insects. We’ll also have Drop-in Artmaking from 1 to 4 p.m., where you’ll learn to use water creatively to make something of your very own.

Then, on Sunday, spend the afternoon with us at Family Day and really dive in. With artmaking, live music, and more, this fun-for-all ages event promises to be a fantastic way to send off the summer. We’ll also be giving away more plants from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and holding meet-and-greets with our Nature Partners, so stop on by!
