Presented in partnership with the Northwest Arkansas Jazz Society, join Kansas City jazz ensemble HoraceScope as we transform our restaurant Eleven into an intimate jazz club, complete with handcrafted drinks, cabaret seating, and superb music overlooking the water.
HoraceScope is a tribute to the music of Horace Silver, one of the most important band leaders and composers in jazz. The band covers Silver’s compositions which include a vast array of styles, including swing, Latin, ballads, bebop and waltzes.
Trumpeter and bandleader Stan Kessler has assembled some of Kansas City’s most venerable jazz artists, both young and “mature”, for this historic presentation.

Stan Kessler is a Trumpet/Flugelhorn player, band leader, clinician, and educator in the Kansas City area. He also does extensive writing and arranging for small groups. Stan also plays drums and hand percussion.
For the last 33 years, Stan has been a fixture in the Kansas City jazz scene. He was voted best trumpet player and leader of the best jazz band (Sons Of Brasil) in KC by the Pitch readers’ poll. He has appeared in concert with Clark Terry, Paquito D’Rivera, Ernie Watts, Gary Foster, Karrin Allyson, Kevin Mahogany, Bobby Watson, John Clayton, Kim Park, and many others.
David Chael is a saxophone player based in the Kansas City area. Born and raised in Kansas City, he graduated from the University of North Texas, where he attained a master’s in music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies in 2001. After graduating in the spring of 2002, he moved back to Kansas City where he continues playing with some of the best musicians in town. He can be heard with several groups around town, including the Roger Wilder Quartet, HoraceScope, Kerry Strayer’s Kansas City Seven, and Westport Art Ensemble.
A native of Rochester, New York, Roger has played with such jazz notables as Stanley Turrentine, Randy Brecker, Adam Nussbaum and Chris Potter. Since settling in Overland Park with his family, he can frequently be seen performing with Angela Hagenbach, the Boulevard Big Band and the Westport Art Ensemble. Whether playing bossa nova or samba, Roger demonstrates impeccable taste and style. His ability to evoke a touch of Jobim is uncanny.
James holds a BA music degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. While in Nebraska he honed his skills as a classical bassist by performing with the Lincoln Symphony, and the Omaha Symphony. He came to Kansas City in 1992, and currently makes his living by playing jazz gigs and producing, engineering, and playing on many local recording projects. James also continues to use his classical bass skills through his principal position with the Northland Symphony Orchestra, in Kansas City. In addition, he performs with The Mighty Mo Box Band, Tim Whitmer and the KC Express, Tom Jacobs, the Dave Stephens Band, and the Kansas City Bass Quartet.
Sam Wisman is a versatile fixture in Kansas City’s creative music scene. Sam is a member of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, the People’s Liberation Big Band, Kinnor Philharmonic, Marimba Sol de Chiapas, HoraceScope, and the Roger Wilder Quintet & Trio. Sam has performed with the Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Ensemble Iberica, the Topeka Symphony, Weird Al Yankovic, Bobby Watson, Terrell Stafford, The New York Voices, The Sons of Brasil and many more. Sam is also a Senior Producer for 91.9 Classical KC and hosts Jazz Across America – Kansas City on San Diego’s KSDS Jazz 88.3. Love to L, J, & Z!
