Pink and Red Roses in Clear Vase
Charles Ethan Porter is believed to be the first Black student to attend the National Academy of Design in 1869. To further his studies, Porter went to London and Paris for artistic training in 1881, carrying letters of introduction from Mark Twain and other Hartford, Connecticut, leaders. Porter was a successful artist and exhibited widely in his lifetime, although he is not widely known today.
