Yayoi Kusama’s artwork, Infinity Mirrored Room—My Heart is Dancing into the Universe (2018) is on view permanently at Crystal Bridges. The room itself is small and filled with mirrors and paper lanterns that have dots that change color. This effect makes it appear like the dots expand forever into the universe.

Yayoi Kusama is a contemporary artist who makes paintings, sculptures, performances, and installations. Dots are a common theme throughout her work—a pattern that she has utilized in her work since she was a child in an effort to escape trauma and anxiety. Crystal Bridges acquired another artwork of hers in 2018, Flowers that Bloom Now, which can be found on the South Lawn. A temporary installation of Narcissus Garden, another work by Kusama, is also on view near the South Lawn at the Crystal Pond.

Since the 1960s, Kusama has been creating Infinity Mirror Rooms that provoke a sense of boundlessness and transcendence through extreme repetition.
