From Flat to Form: Drawing & Sculpture (9th - 12th Grade)
Students will learn how to transform 2-dimentional ideas into 3-dimensional sculptures. This workshop focuses on how Josefa Flores González, also known as Marisol, created sculptures by utilizing both round and flat surfaces to make something entirely new. Students will be challenged to create an artwork that combines 2D and 3D elements and to make a work of art that captures the feeling of a memory.
Remembering Landscapes: Hearing Color, Shape, and Line (9th - 12th Grade)
In this workshop, students will be stepping into the shoes of Joan Mitchell. Students will create artworks inspired by the places they have been and the music they associate with those places. Students will investigate how memory, color, and abstraction can communicate a sense of place through expressive painting.
Print. Layer. Repeat. The Art of Screen Printing (9th - 12th Grade)
Why might an artist want to create more than one of their artworks? Printmaking has a rich history of raising awareness, advertising, and creating an entry point for all audiences or collectors. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s use of silk-screen printing, students will be challenged to create a multi-layered artwork and experiment with texture, color, and process through the art of silkscreen printing.
Artland: Collaborating on Do Ho Suh’s Artland (3rd - 8th Grade)
In this workshop, students contribute to Artland, a collaborative public art project created by collection artist Do Ho Suh and his children. Built by students, families, and visitors at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Artland grows through the creative contributions of its participants. Using Model Magic, students will create a small-scale sculpture inspired by animals and plants found in everyday life. As they add their creations to the larger installation, students will explore the role of public art in bringing people together and consider how collaborative art projects can foster connection, participation, and community.
