Must-see Winter Exhibitions and Art

While you can find a diverse range of inspiring exhibitions and experiences here year-round, wintertime is particularly perfect for celebrating holiday cheer with family and friends, or simply taking quiet moments for yourself to stop and reflect as the year slows down.

The 2024-2025 winter season offers you the chance to do just that, from an otherworldly outdoor experience, to an eye-opening exhibition of art and stories that defy stereotypes, and more—all with connecting threads of art, nature, and history.

Step into the North Forest for Time Loop (on view through January 5), an unforgettable outdoor experience by Klip Collective. Using light, sound, and projection mapping, Time Loop transforms acres of Ozark nature into a mesmerizing journey through fractured time and space. Visitors can wander a glowing forest landscape to explore six immersive installations, including a broken time machine, all set to a custom soundtrack that heightens the magic of it all.

Inside the galleries, get to know Knowing the West (on view through January 27), a groundbreaking traveling exhibition that redefines the American West as pop culture knows it. Through art by Native American artists, women, and other underrepresented voices, Knowing the West reveals the rich and complex stories of the people who shaped the region’s past and present.

We always have a variety of free exhibitions on view for you to make creative connections and expand your perspective in—without having to buy a ticket. This winter, Navigating Lolelaplap (on view through March 31) invites visitors to learn about and celebrate Marshallese culture rooted in Northwest Arkansas, while American Sunrise (on view through March 23) showcases Indigenous art that bridges past, present, and future.

Visit our Exhibitions page to find out more about what’s on view.

Winter Trails and Outdoor Adventures

Featuring 120 acres of native Ozark forest, our trails offer a peaceful escape year-round, and winter is no exception.

While some of the plant life takes a backseat to the serene beauty of bare branches, the paved trails remain accessible in most weather, making them a great option for a brisk winter walk. You may be able to still spot some evergreen plants, like American holly along the North Forest or Tulip Tree Trail, which add some life to the surrounding winter landscape.

Remember that shorter days mean the trails close earlier, as they’re no longer accessible to the public after sunset. Plan your visit accordingly and enjoy the quiet beauty of the grounds during the daytime.

And if you’re still craving an outdoor adventure after dark, Time Loop will be open to light up your night in the North Forest.

For those contemplative times when there’s nothing better than bundling up and with a good book, the Museum Library—open during all museum public hours—is a great go-to spot. And once you’ve read and relaxed the day away, earlier sunsets mean you can enjoy unique views of the museum after dark.
