About the Artist

An Atlanta, Georgia, native, DeJuan Gilchrist is a self-proclaimed “Afro-Surrealist Representational Abstractionist”. Through gradually applied layers of ink, Gilchrist’s work contemplates themes of repetition, intimacy, and suffering.  Arms contort, conflict, and transform across Gilchrist’s compositions as he navigates maturation and individuation as a Black man in 2022.

Gilchrist graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BA in Studio Art and a minor in African American Studies and is currently enrolled at the University of Arkansas, pursuing his MFA in Drawing.
