Create one-of-a-kind personal banners inspired by our exhibition Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture—led by exhibition artist Cheryl Pope!

Come design and create inspirational banners in this two-day, hands-on workshop. Led by artist-instructor Cheryl Pope, you’ll reflect on language, writing, and what moves you before designing and preparing unique felt lettering on banner backings.

Using appliqué and hand-stitching techniques, we’ll bring our words and messages to life.

The result: bold, meaningful banners with motivational messages about everyday life, personal reflections, social justice, or simply for fun!

Perfect for beginners and applique experts alike, this guided workshop is open to everyone ages 14+. Please plan to attend both class sessions.

About the Instructor

Cheryl Pope

Cheryl Pope is an interdisciplinary visual artist known for her explorations of identity, race, gender, and community through textile-based works. She is among the featured artists in the exhibition Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture, on view at Crystal Bridges from September 13, 2025 to January 26, 2026.

Pope received her BFA and Master’s in Design from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, where she is now an Adjunct Professor. Pope studied under artist Nick Cave for twelve years, was a teaching artist at the Museum of Contemporary Art for seven years, and worked in multiple community-based organizations throughout Chicago. Recent exhibitions and projects include Declaration, the inaugural exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Richmond, VA (2018); Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland (2019), Chrystal Bridges Museum, Arkansas. A recipient of a 2015 3Arts Award, Pope’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Joan Flasche Artist’s Book Collection, Chicago; Seattle Art Museum, WA; and Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA.
