I became interested in art during first grade when I heard about Van Gogh’s ear. In high school I was moved into advanced art classes. This is where my passion for art began. After taking a sculpture class at the University of North Texas, I was hooked on the 3D form. I graduated with a BFA in 2003.
I have been working with stained glass since 1994. After my family and I moved to the Ozark mountains in 1999, the unique shapes of the roots I had thrown around the yard inspired this new type of art combining roots and stained glass.
I have always loved trees—I would climb them to do my homework. The tree roots create the design elements. They let me know what they want to be. Sometimes when I pick them up you can tell what it wants to be; other times, I have to turn them this way or that way.
In 2020, I had a bunch of scraps of glass which lead to my door titled 2020. This has been displayed outside through the city of Fayetteville at the Ramble in 2022. This piece has lead to using my scraps as mosaic work on clear glass.
I have displayed my work in Arkansas, Texas, Nevada, New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas. I was one of five people profiled in the 2013 Fayetteville Insider’s Guide. I am exhibited at the Eurekan gallery in Eureka Springs, Terra Studios in Durham, and Art Ventures in Fayetteville, where I work as Gallery Assistant, and The Butler center in Little Rock, Arkansas. I’ve also been in several local competitions and recently won “Best in Sculpture” in the NWA competition.
My message is to balance with nature. The fusion humans and nature need to have. To work together to make a more beautiful world. To see the world through nature’s eyes. The root is like the human soul: often hidden but beautiful.
