Shawn Quilliams is a queer artist and currently an MFA candidate at the University of Arkansas. He is from East Tennessee, right outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Shawn makes work about queer identity and his relationship to class structure and Appalachian culture. His work is narrative; each piece tells a story that contributes to a larger narrative within the body of work. TV Shows like Goosebumps and Scooby Doo inspire his paintings, as he recounts his experience through fantasy, horror, and mystery. He received his BFA in Painting from East Tennessee State University in 2020, attended the Chautauqua School of Art with a full scholarship in the Summer of 2021, and participated in many workshops at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Outside of the studio, you can find Shawn hiking through the Ozarks, playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends, and watching the latest horror movie at a nearby theater.
