Woman Reading

Will Barnet was an incredibly prolific painter and printmaker, making art nearly every day for eight decades. He often portrayed women and animals in domestic settings, using blocks of color and precise lines to give the foreground and background “equivalent weight.” To achieve his final composition in oil on canvas, he first tried out his subject in drawing and watercolor. Notice how Barnet’s studies of the same scene in different materials connect his process to our own observations of relationships between the versions.
