The Battle Hymn of the Republic: A Hymnal

Bethany Collins investigates how language connects, divides, and influences the world around us, especially through songs. This hymnal includes the many versions of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” including the Civil-War era “The Marching Song of the First Arkansas Colored Regiment.” Notice how Collins burns away the musical notes with a laser, leaving behind the lyrics that chronicle an idea of America through a single song.
