Guernica (Resist #3)

Past and present collide in this work by Mickalene Thomas. Layering images of protestors and activists during the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements, Thomas highlights the ongoing struggle for racial justice. She also includes figures and motifs from Pablo Picasso’s anti-war painting Guernica, connecting US social movements to a global story of mourning and resistance. Thinking about violence across space and time, Thomas asks us to reflect on how much—or how little—the world has changed.
