I Am Not Your Negro

This work’s title references a 2016 documentary about James Baldwin (1924–1987), an influential Black writer and critic. Instead of depicting Baldwin, Bisa Butler based the figure on a 1936 photograph of an unidentified man in Mississippi. She used vibrant textiles to reinvent the man’s outfit and craft a bold persona for him. “The man is wearing airplanes on his pants because he, like James Baldwin, is an expat. I imagine him being [someone] who lives in Europe, travels through Africa and Asia, but is an African American,” she envisioned. “He is not a ‘yes man’: he will challenge the status quo.”
