Abstraction: Kiowa by Design

The beaded high-heel Converse are a contemporary version of historical Kiowa leggings and moccasins that were meant to be worn as an outward expression of beauty comprised of narratives connected to individuality, identity, and the natural world. Teri Greeves highlights the continuity of Kiowa oak leaf and abstract motifs across time. Abstraction: Kiowa by Design portrays a woman in traditional Kiowa dress on the surface of her shoes. This work recalls fashion designer Norma Kamali’s imaginative 1980s high-heeled sneakers that turned the most functional of footwear into high fashion. [89]
