Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds (Males Fighting)

Flashes of color and shapes overlap and swirl on the page. Toh Yah (Gerald Nailor) uses bold colors and movement to show two male hummingbirds alongside a Yei at left. In Diné (Navajo) culture, Yei (pronounced “yay”) are beings believed to promote healing powers and act as mediators between humans and the unseen or unknown. The scene sparks curiosity about the intertwined relationships between animals, humans, and the spirit world Text Written by Isabella Hernandez, Registration Intern; MA, Art History in Arts of the Americas, University of Arkansas ’26
