White Brazilian Orchid after Martin Johnson Heade
Brazilian American artist Vik Muniz uses layers of meticulously colored paper to make an almost sculptural recreation of one of Martin Johnson Heade’s signature paintings. Muniz then photographs his representation of the original. Note the shadows under the Cattleya Orchid—the national flower of Brazil—and the sky seen in layers resembling a topographical map. The hummingbird, resting on a small branch, is illuminated even in the paper, paying homage to the luminous quality of Heade’s paintings.
