William Smith
Dr. William Smith was one of Pennsylvania’s most highly regarded educators, intellectuals, and clergymen. He wears black academic robes and a red hood signifying his Oxford degree. The brass surveying instrument, compass, books, and papers point to Dr. Smith’s interest in the sciences and education. A panoramic view of his estate is visible through the window. Gilbert Stuart knew his subject quite well, as the artist and his growing family lived in a house owned by Dr. Smith.
