Portrait of a Young Woman
The identity of this woman, carefully drawn with warm pastels, is unknown to us today. French-born artist Henrietta Johnston drew her Southern sitter after the Johnston family settled in present-day Charleston, South Carolina, in 1708. Although the details of Portrait of a Young Woman are fuzzy, by 1710 Johnston was already regarded as a professional portraitist whose work was collected during her lifetime.
