About Ariana Makau

Ariana Makau’s work is most fulfilling at the intersection of equity, preservation and art. For over 30 years, her passion for preservation has also been her profession. She holds an MA in Stained Glass Conservation from the RCA, in London, England and is founder and principal conservator of Nzilani Glass Conservation, based in Oakland, California (est. 2003). Ariana’s museum projects span the States and abroad including the V&A, The Met, SFMoMA , Getty and Crystal Bridges. Formerly the Second Vice President and Health & Safety Chair of the Stained Glass Association of America; Ariana is a current Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (FIIC). She’s also a Board Member of the Western Chapter of Association of Preservation Technology (WCAPT).

Nzilani’s mission, “Be Safe. Have Fun. Do Excellent Work.” empowers clients and communities by sharing processes, health and safety procedures plus the importance of preserving cultural landscapes in their environment. In 2024 Makau founded The Fillet Foundation (TFF), a non-profit for which she is the executive director. TFF “brings underserved people and overlooked places to the forefront of preservation.” This goal is achieved through various programs focusing on Conservation, Accessibility, Restorative preservation and Engagement (C.A.R.E.); with a focus on workforce development and internship opportunities in architectural art preservation.
