Photography by Edward C. Robison III

Untitled

Streaks, dribbles, and swaths of paint engulf the surface of this painting. The now-frozen marks tell a story of the expressive actions needed to make them. For Joan Mitchell painting was time travel: “I paint from remembered landscapes that I carry with me—and remembered feelings of them, which of course become transformed. I could certainly never mirror nature. I would like more to paint what it leaves me with.”
