Moon and Sea No. II
Dove created Moon and Sea II shortly after a harrowing experience while living on his boat near New York’s Long Island Sound. A violent storm rolled in while he was moored in Manhasset Bay, and the power of the wind and rain strongly affected him. This painting captures the serene and eerie quietness after the storm had passed, with undulating layers of waves edged in black.
