Modern Madonna

This piece recalls the traditional image of the baby Jesus in the arms of Mary. John Bradley Storrs used a hard-edged architectural style to depict this familiar, intimate theme. His focus on mother and child imagery stems from his close relationship with his mother. The only son of seven children, Storrs’s childhood was full of pampering. He created this sculpture shortly after his mother’s death and the birth of his only child—two of his most pivotal and transformative life experiences.
