Peonies in a Breeze

Take a moment to follow the curves of the gently swaying peony petals and the swirls of the darkening sky. Feel the breeze.

John La Farge often chose to paint in watercolor, building up thin washes of luminous shades that allowed him to capture a fleeting moment of natural beauty and simulate the effect of light on color. This proved to be an important part of his practice: in addition to painting and illustration, La Farge designed exquisite stained glass windows.
