Gwendolyn

Rendered in her characteristically colorful and abstract figurative style, Gwendolyn represents one of Niki de Saint Phalle’s most significant works. Here, the artist presents an exaggerated and dynamic version of the pregnant body. The colorful designs and flower collages that adorn the sculpture help accentuate the figure’s roundness and weight. For Saint Phalle, Gwendolyn expresses and celebrates the power rooted in fertility and the feminine form while also symbolizing her hope for creating a world where women are ascendant, overcoming sexism and inequality.
