Gush of Fire

These lines recall the vertical threads on a loom, called the warp. Tawney created this drawing after seeing a Jacquard loom in action—which has a warp with this unique triangular shape.

For Tawney, making art was a meditative, spiritual experience. The title reflflects this, drawn from the writings of Christian mystic Jakob Böhme (1575–1624): “The soul in its substance is a magical gush of fire.”
