Coastal Stack XV

Michael Peterson makes work inspired by his environment. He created this sculpture from a single green madrone burl, a tree native to the western coast of the US and Canada, carving it with a chainsaw to create each hollowed section. He then allowed the wood to dry, warping according to the inherent nature of the material. As he explains, “During the drying process, the wood undergoes a transformation, a shape-shifting event due to the wood’s cellular collapse and shrinking.”
