Untitled (A Correct Chart of Hispaniola with the Windward Passage)
A partially obscured figure crouches over a historical map of the island of Hispaniola in an act of anticolonial resistance. Firelei Báez blends cartography with cultural storytelling to explore themes of identity, colonization, and migration tied to the Carribean. Báez centers Afro-Carribean experiences and ancestral memory. Her work invites viewers to reconsider history and geography as dynamic, living stories shaped by movement, resistance, and cultural survival across time and space.
