Stone City Landscape
Marvin Cone painted this scene of rolling hills and abundant land while working as a professor of art in Iowa during the Great Depression. He captured the natural beauty of Stone City by painting the landscape without any figures or grazing animals. The only sign of life is the lone black bird perched on a fence post that disappears into the hillside. Stone City Landscape suggests both the quiet nature of rural living and the majesty of the Midwestern landscape.
