Winter in the Country
In his journal, Jervis McEntee wrote: “Some people call my landscapes gloomy and disagreeable… But this is a mistake... Nature is not sad to me but quiet, pensive, restful.” In this painting he conveyed the calmness of winter. Broad expanses of snow and sky fill the canvas, while ice skaters on the frozen pond show one way to make the most of frigid weather.
