Motive of Space and Form—A New Jersey Village (Montville)

Oscar Bluemner’s Motive of Space and Form—A New Jersey Village (Montville) depicts houses along a canal in Montville, New Jersey. Bluemner abstracted the scene by manipulating the size of the buildings and combining multiple perspectives of the landscape. Bluemner used color, especially his signature vermillion red, to express emotion or meaning. He described red as the “chief color and maximum of everything artistic; the strongest attraction, signal, warning, symbol of power, vitality, energy, life.”
