James McNeill Whistler made many small panel paintings, such as this one, using extremely diluted oil paint to create thin washes of color. Although small, the work was framed in order to assert its importance—it wasn’t a sketch or study for a larger painting, but was a complete artwork in itself. While the subject of this painting is a stroll at the French beach resort of Dieppe, Whistler’s title emphasizes the harmony of color as his main focus.
