Portrait of George Henschel
JOHN SINGER SARGENT (1856-1925)
Portrait of George Henschel
1889 - Oil on canvas

John Singer Sargent was known for painting the elite of the day, and earned financial success through his commissions. However, this portrait of musician George Henschel was not a commission, but a gift to a dear friend. Creating the work over a series of five sittings, Sargent captures the essence of Henschel’s personality as youthful and relaxed. When Henschel’s wife saw the portrait for the first time, she remarked, “How beautiful! It’s George having arrived in heaven."
