About the Don Tyson Prize

The Don Tyson Prize was established in honor of the late Don Tyson, former chairman and CEO of Tyson Foods. A jury of respected museum and academic art historians empanelled by the museum recommend for recognition an individual or institution whose work has significantly advanced knowledge in the field of American art over the course of a career. The honor carries a cash prize as well as recognition by Crystal Bridges during an event given in the recipient’s honor.

In 2012, Crystal Bridges received a $5 million endowment from the Tyson family and Tyson Foods, Inc., to establish the Tyson Scholars of American Art program and the Don Tyson Prize. Tyson Scholars is a research and residency program that helps promote the study and understanding of American art. In recent years, the prize was endowed with an additional $5 million commitment from the Tyson family and Tyson Foods, Inc.

Now Accepting Your Nominations for the 2020 Don Tyson Prize

Deadline for nominations is September 30, 2020*

Created as a way to identify and recognize significant achievements in the field of American art, the Don Tyson Prize carries a $200,000 cash award. Access and change are at the heart of the Don Tyson Prize. The award is open to organizations or individual artists, working in any medium, anywhere in the U.S. Nominations are encouraged for living individuals or organizations who have:

  • Changed the way we look at, think about, or experience art.
  • Impacted the field through innovation and risk-taking.
  • Navigated the current crises in creative and inspiring ways.

The Tyson Family established an endowed fund at Crystal Bridges for the purpose of creating a prize in memory of Don Tyson, former chairman and CEO of Tyson Foods, to honor his legacy.

“My father, for whom the prize is named, was a believer in education, American history, and the American spirit,” said John Tyson, Chairman of Tyson Foods. “This type of accolade for the work being done to further American art would have been very meaningful to him.”

A national jury of museum and academic art historians empaneled by Crystal Bridges will review the nominations and announce the winner in Fall 2020.

All nominations for the 2018 Don Tyson Prize, will be considered for the 2020 Prize.
