Soul of a Nation Film Series » Mo’ Better Blues

Duke University Professor Mark Anthony Neal presents a screening of the Hollywood hit film Mo’ Better Blues, followed by a group discussion. Spike Lee’s film is a knockout ode to music, love, and blazing artistry, showcasing a magnetic performance from Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington and a star-studded cast with Wesley Snipes, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Turturro.  Talented, music-obsessed jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam (Washington) is a New York City bandleader with a gambling-addicted manager (Spike Lee) and major female trouble involving two girlfriends, which keeps Bleek from realizing he’s headed for ruin, both artistically and romantically.  Lee neatly subverts the usual “tortured artist” clichés in this bracing musical drama, loaded with stunning visual flourishes and featuring a killer score by the director’s own jazzman father, Bill Lee.
