Virtual Art by the Glass » Eye Embroidery with Kathryn Hunter
Join us for a digital evening of at-home artmaking for adults in our Virtual Art by the Glass event, with step-by-step instruction from artist and owner of Blackbird Letterpress, Kathryn Hunter. Relax, pour yourself a drink, and connect virtually as you’re guided through the process of wool applique, basic embroidery stitches (including alternative “chain stitch” and French knots), as well as how to add embroidered text. In this dynamic class, you will explore how embroidery has been used for “craftivism”, protest, and awareness for hundreds of years. You’ll also create one embroidered eye in class that can be used as a patch or a soft pin for a jacket or backpack.
What you’ll need:
- Wool felt (preferably 1mm), about 6″ x 4″ white for the background, 1.5″ x 1.5″ black for the pupil, and 2.5″ x 2.5″ of any color for the eye
- Pearl cotton embroidery thread No. 8 (or you can use embroidery floss), to match the pupil and eye color, and as many other colors as you like
- Embroidery needle
- Fabric marking pen, optional (the artist recommends a Chaco pen with eraser, blue water soluble)
- Eye template
