A Conversation with Al Bell and Mark Anthony Neal

Join legendary music and entertainment executive Al Bell for an afternoon conversation with Dr. Mark Anthony Neal. Bell is the former Chairman and Owner of Stax Records and served as President of MoTown Records Group. The discussion will include stories from Bell’s monumental work as an instrumental figure in many prominent musicians’ careers, such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Staple Singers, and Prince. Bell said, “If you take music out of our lives we cease to exist as a human race.”

As the former Chairman and Owner of Stax Records, Bell was responsible for the careers of numerous music icons and the overall direction of American soul music. He subsequently served as President of Motown Records Group. Today, Mr. Bell is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Al Bell Presents, LLC., (albellpresents.com) presenting a unique new paradigm of business innovation within the greater music and entertainment industry. Among his many honors, Mr. Bell was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2002, received the Arthur A. Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Black Chamber of Commerce in 2008, and received honorary doctorate degrees from Philander Smith College in 1972 and 2011.

Mark Anthony Neal is Professor of African and African American Studies and the founding Director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture, and Entrepreneurship (CADCE) at Duke University. He offers courses on Black Masculinity, Popular Culture, and Digital Humanities, including signature courses on Michael Jackson and the Black Performance Tradition, and The History of Hip-Hop, which he co-teaches with Grammy-award-winning producer 9th Wonder (Patrick Douthit).
