Volunteer Spotlight: Jary Griffith

Meet Crystal Bridges Volunteer, Jary Griffith

“I always look forward to my time at the museum.”

Career Information
I worked as a Regional Manager for the BNSF Railway for 33 years. I retired in 2006 and moved to Northwest Arkansas.
I also served in the US Army from 1968-1971.

My favorite hobby is making stained glass windows and sun catchers. I enjoy reading, playing games, and traveling. I like being in skits and drama. I also volunteer time at my church where I paint and work on the landscaping.

Favorite artwork or space at the museum
My favorite artworks at the museum are the offerings by Martin Johnson Heade. I love bird watching and appreciating the grace and beauty of nature. I enjoy the Early American Art Gallery.

How did you learn about the museum, and what prompted you to get involved?
We lived here during most of the construction of the museum. We would often walk on the trails to view the progress of the work. I began volunteering once I was fully retired.

In what ways have you been involved as a volunteer with the museum thus far?
I work as a museum guide, greeting our guests when they visit.

What keeps you coming back to volunteer?
I keep coming back because of the wonderful volunteers I work with and the guest interaction.

What have you learned or how have you been personally affected from your experience with the museum?
I think I have learned to really listen carefully to our guests.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
I enjoy having fun with our guests.

Do you have a funny or inspirational story you can briefly tell about your volunteer experience?
One morning Alice Walton came in the Main Lobby.
I told my fellow volunteers, “Watch this.” I greeted Alice with, “Good morning. Is this your first visit to our Museum?” Alice was a great sport. She laughed and then gave me a big hug.

Anything else you would like to share?
I always look forward to my time at the museum.

Do you have any advice for individuals considering volunteering with Crystal Bridges?
Get out of your comfort zone and join the family. I promise you will be blessed.
