The museum’s beautiful North Lawn, visible from the Early Twentieth-Century Gallery bridge, is a perfect place for a family picnic or disc toss. It can be a little challenging to reach, as it is accessible only via a long set of steep concrete stairs up from the East Terrace, a short walk up the Rock Ledge Trail, and then down another set of steep steel stairs down. However, the pleasure of the green lawn, natural stream, and up-close encounter with Mark di Suvero’s sculpture Lowell’s Ocean makes it worth the hike.
