We are losing the LOVE on Crystal Bridges’ South Lawn. Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture is being de-installed this week.
But not to worry, the loss is temporary: the sculpture is simply moving into the Museum’s vault so our preparators and Grounds crew can install a new, larger base for it, which will give it better protection from the damp earth and grass. While the sculpture is in storage, a sculpture conservator will inspect it and perform any conservation on the work if needed.
Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture has been one of the most photographed works on Crystal Bridges’ grounds. All of this LOVE shown to the work has meant that folks are frequently walking around it or standing next to it, which has been bad news for the surrounding grass. After struggling to keep the area around the sculpture green for two years, the Trails and Grounds crew reluctantly admits defeat. Permeable paving will be installed around the new base: the same kind that has been used on the nearby short-cut path to the Crystal Spring Trail. You can look for the return of Indiana’s LOVE around the first week of August.
