Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Come celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with site-specific dances in the North Forest! Autumnal Equinox: A Color Field Performance Program is a performance in three acts. Guests are invited to experience three different choreographed performances by three dancers interacting with three artworks included in Color Field, found in Crystal Bridges’ North Forest.
There will be two performances of Autumnal Equinox: one on Saturday evening and one on Sunday afternoon. The performance program is free with online registration (scroll below to register).
Get to know the inspiration behind each sculptural dance choreographed by three Arkansas-based dancers — Ballet Arkansas’s Zeek Wright, NWA Ballet Theater’s James Vessell, and Arkansas Arts Academy dance teacher Karen Castleman.
Dancer Karen Castleman on TYPOE’s Forms of Life:
“I have chosen to interact with a sculpture by TYPOE that resembles children’s building blocks. The artist created these giant building blocks to reference the type of play in which children engage. It is a type of play that provides opportunity for decision making about how to interact with the spaces, objects and relationships in the world around them. Formative play. In my interaction with these objects, I take three passes through the playing field. The first and second, with childlike eyes and imagination, making quick decisions about relationships, associations, and larger than life realities. In the third pass, I see them through the lens of maturity. Informed by the decisions that shape adult life, I wonder about propriety, possibility, hope, regret and remembrance.”
Castleman will be performing at this artwork, Forms of Life by TYPOE.
Dancer Zeek Wright (in partnership with Ballet Arkansas’s Artistic Director Michael Fothergill) on Spencer Finch’s Back to Kansas:
“‘Pendulum’ explores the universal human need to delicately balance emotional secrecy and exposure. When opposing forces or influences are balanced internally, a more true version of “self” emerges.”
Zeek will be performing at this artwork, Back to Kansas by Spencer Finch.
Dancer James Vessell on Sam Fall’s Untitled (Maze):
“My individual choreographic work is a journey through a few stages of my life. Through this work the emotions of love, acceptance, rejection, anger, pride, loneliness and peace will appear. Sam Falls’s Untitled (Maze) is the art installation that is featured in the work as a representation of “home”. Home has been many places and at many points home is just the people that make up the space. Home is for shelter and support and throughout this work I will lean and sometimes return back ‘home.'”
Vessell will be performing at this artwork, Maze (Untitled) by Sam Falls.
