Shelves of books chosen for the book sale, waiting for the Big Day.

The staff in Crystal Bridges’ Library have been working toward our June, 2015, book sale for the past four years! First, nearly 50,000 items acquired through purchases and donations in 2005 and 2006 needed to be unpacked, cataloged, and shelved. An important piece of that was sorting the books to weed out duplicates or unwanted items and separate out other materials such as exhibition catalogs and ephemera to be dealt with separately.

This was not an easy task, but it is essential if the goal is a focused collection like ours. Signed copies and rare copies needed to be pulled out for secure shelving, and certain key pieces of information needed to be determined for each book, aside from just whether or not it fit within our collection guidelines. We took into consideration things like: whether an image of a work of art in the Museum collection was included; what artist, movement, or genre was discussed; the author or historian; the publisher; the content. To be thorough, each book needed to be reviewed at least three or four times.

I began my first review of each of the un-cataloged backlog of books (roughly 17,000) in the winter of 2012. I repeated the process in 2013 and 2014, and finally completed reviewing the first two large collections in May of this year.

But in 2013 and 2014 we received two large book donations: one of about 90 boxes of books, and another one totaling 3,000 books!  The same sorting process needed to be done for each of those collections. We gave a large number of the duplicates to the University of Arkansas Libraries and a few to local public libraries.  The leftover 2,000 books make up our first Library Book Sale!

Bring your friends and enjoy digging deep into the stacks of sale items which run the gamut from artists and art techniques to Fabergé eggs, glass, gardening, collecting, and guides to other museums. We are even selling older, nicely bound books that are popularly used to cozy up interior spaces.

Thanks to all our amazing library volunteers who have helped make this sale possible!

Is there a book available featuring the art of Chrystal Bridges?

    • Linda DeBerry says:

Yes, there is! You can pick up a copy of Celebrating the American Spirit, the museum’s inaugural catalog, in the Museum Store.

  2.' bennett wilson says:

Do you plan to hold another sale in the future?

    • Linda DeBerry says:

      Hi Mr. Wilson.
There is not sale on the horizon. We only do them when we have accumulated a certain quantity of books that don’t fit our specific mission or are duplicates. It’s not impossible that we would have another one, but nothing is planned at present. Thanks for your interest.
