“Good morning! Crystal Bridges Museum. My name is Jan, can I help you?” As the Guest Services concierge responding to our Member and Guest calls and emails, I’m never sure what new, interesting, or quirky requests or questions might come my way. Talking with our Members and Guests about the wonderful opportunities for enjoyment here at the Museum always makes for an interesting conversation that is inevitably rewarding and fun. However, sometimes a call comes in that makes me realize just how special and important our Museum has become to the lives of so many of our Guests.
“Well good morning Jan, thanks for taking my call. I am so happy to talk to you today. I have a very special VIP who would like to visit Crystal Bridges. You don’t know her, but she is a very special VIP to me … my wife of 63 years.” Hearing that, I knew this was a special call and this was a special couple. I could tell my caller wanted to make sure this was a special visit for his wife. What I didn’t realize was just how special this trip was.
“She has been reading about your museum since you opened, and we’ve been meaning to plan a trip. You know how it is, you get busy and time gets away from you. Well, unfortunately her cancer that was in remission has flared up again, and she is determined that a visit to Crystal Bridges is the one thing she will do while she has time. Can you help us with a little information to help us plan our trip?” Wow. Of course I could help. Helping this gentleman plan what he believed to be his last journey with his life’s partner was as special and moving an experience as I’ve had and made me realize even more deeply how much of an impact our Museum has had on the art landscape. My caller went on to explain that he and his wife had been fortunate enough to travel to most of the major art museums on both coasts and across the country. Now, this last journey, while not the farthest from their Atlanta home, was certainly going to be their most special. And I was privileged to play a small part in helping to bring it about.
I hope that the next time any of us have the opportunity to walk through our galleries, stroll along our trails or enjoy a rare book from our Library while taking in the incredible view, we will remember just how treasured these experiences are for so many.
I hope you enjoy your next visit to Crystal Bridges!
