“The future will belong to the nature-smart, those individuals, families, businesses, and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.” –Richard Louv
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art welcomes all to celebrate the American spirit in a setting that unites the power of art with the beauty of nature.
The beauty and power of nature are central to the experience of Crystal Bridges. With that in mind, we are proud to host nationally recognized author and nature advocate Richard Louv on Friday, May 9 for a public lecture in the Great Hall at 7 p.m. You can register for the talk here.
In the spirit of each museum department embracing current events, the Crystal Bridges Library is leading a discussion to further explore the topics raised by Richard Louv in his book, The Nature Principle. Today, we have become disconnected from the natural landscape and from finding meaning in the natural environment. Louv proposes that we have become stuck in a state of being nature deficient. Join us in the library on May 7 as we express viewpoints on the topic and determine the importance of balancing a technological life with experiences in the natural world, thereby achieving a more authentic self.
“Primarily a statement of philosophy, the Nature Principle is supported by a growing body of theoretical, anecdotal, and empirical research that describes the restorative power of nature — its impact on our senses and intelligence; on our physical, psychological, and spiritual health; and on the bonds of family, friendship, and the multispecies community….What would our lives be like if our days and nights were as immersed in nature as they are in electronics? How can each of us help create that life-enhancing world, not only in a hypothetical future, but right now, for our families and for ourselves?”
Do you agree or disagree with his observations/hypotheses? Can you achieve a day or evening without using any type of technology? Can your family? What actions or changes have you taken to give birth to a “hybrid mind?” Share with us how you’re achieving a biophilic design in your life.
