Library Director Catherine Petersen will discuss William Birch’s book The City of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania North America as it Appeared in the Year 1800. The first truly American color plate book, The City of Philadelphia reveals a unique visual record of the newly formed United States’ capital at a time when it was the most cosmopolitan city in the Western Hemisphere.  Each print illustrates a scene of Philadelphians attending to everyday business, labor, or leisure, and is of great historical importance.  Other titles of American leisure genres will also be available to view.
