Phat Tire Provides Wheels for Tyson Scholars

Visiting scholars to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art will now have their own set of wheels during their residencies, courtesy of Phat Tire Bike Shop. The Bentonville business has donated four bicycles for use by recipients of the Tyson Scholars of American Art fellowships while they are in residence in Bentonville.

Crystal Bridges Offers Extended Viewing Hours for Rockwell Exhibition
Two New Exhibitions on American Genre Painting Open May 11

This Saturday, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opens two new temporary exhibitions featuring American genre painting. Also on that date, the museum will begin offering extended Saturday viewing hours for American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell. On Saturdays only, the exhibition will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The final day for public viewing of American Chronicles is Monday, May 27.

A Bold Sculpture by Artist Keith Haring Debuts at Crystal Bridges

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has recently installed a rare sculpture by 1980s graffiti artist Keith Haring on the Museum’s outdoor patio area known as Walker Landing. The sculpture, Two-Headed Figure, 1986, features heads of two of the archetypical figures common to Haring’s bold graphic work—a baby and a barking dog—attached to opposite ends of a jellybean-shaped body. Crafted of aluminum and bright red polyurethane paint, the work enlivens an area frequently used as a lunchtime spot by visiting school groups and families. The acquisition of this work was made possible by Sybil Robson Orr and Matthew Orr.

May Programming at Crystal Bridges: Outdoor Sculpture Unveiling, Art Museum Day, and a Farewell to Norman Rockwell

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art kicks off the month of May with the lighting of a new illuminated sculpture on the museum’s landscaped grounds. Buckyball, a 30-foot tall LED-lighted sculpture by acclaimed artist Leo Villareal, will be lighting up the night near Crystal Bridges’ Orchard Trail beginning May 2, following a May 1 public presentation by the artist in the Museum’s Great Hall.

Crystal Bridges Announces Upcoming Exhibitions: Rarely Exhibited Works on Paper, Historical Documents, and the Stieglitz Collection

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art continues its 2013 exhibitions line-up with an international collaboration, rarely exhibited works from the permanent collection, the traveling exhibition Angels & Tomboys, a focused look at America in the ‘30s and ‘40s, and a collection of personal papers pertaining to the life and times of George Washington. Also scheduled for the latter half of the year is the much-anticipated exhibition of a selection of Modernist works and photographs from the collection of Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe; a collection which Crystal Bridges shares jointly with Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Artist Leo Villareal’s Buckyball to debut
at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

A 30-foot, ever-changing, lighted sculpture capable of displaying some 16 million distinct colors will be installed on the grounds of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art this spring, thanks to a loan arrangement with the Madison Square Park Conservancy, New York; Gering & López Gallery, New York; and the artist who created the work, Leo Villareal. His sculpture, Buckyball, features two geometric spheres, one encased in the other, that take the shape of a Carbon 60 molecule. The structure is covered in LED tubes that display different colored lights based on computer software, which Villareal programmed.

Luis Jimenez’s Vaquero Debuts on Crystal Bridges’ Art Trail

Visitors to Crystal Bridges’ Art Trail will encounter a lively new sculpture near the museum’s south entrance. Yesterday, preparators installed Vaquero, a large sculpture by renowned artist Luis Jimenez. Crafted of polychrome fiberglass, the work depicts a vaquero (Spanish for cowboy) atop a boldly colored bucking bronco, and is a 16-foot-tall tribute to the Mexican cowboy of the American West.

Crystal Bridges Hosts Norman Rockwell Exhibition

One of the most popular American artists of the past century, Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was a keen observer of human nature and a gifted storyteller. His paintings graced more than 300 covers of the popular Saturday Evening Post magazine and he is one of the best-loved illustrators in the history of American art. A traveling exhibition of Rockwell’s paintings will open at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art on Saturday, March 9. American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell features 50 original Norman Rockwell paintings and a complete set of all 323 of Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post covers, and will be on view through May 27.

Crystal Bridges Announces Leadership Realignment to Support Strategic Plan

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Board of Directors and board chair Alice Walton have promoted Crystal Bridges Executive Director Don Bacigalupi to the newly created position of president and appointed him to Crystal Bridges Board of Directors. The board has also promoted Crystal Bridges Deputy Director for Operations and Administration Rod Bigelow to executive director. Both promotions are immediately effective.
