Heroes of Horticulture
January 14 – March 21
Photographs of botanical survivors, from the gnarled, 50-foot-wide root system of an ancient fig tree to the dew-drenched petals of a rare tree peony, are featured in Heroes of Horticulture. Heritage sites from throughout the United States that are threatened by development, disease and the ravages of time have been documented by 12 renowned photographers and included in this traveling exhibition organized by the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in collaboration with The Cultural Landscape Foundation of Washington, D.C.
Looking at Our Landscape
April 1 – May 31
Local landscapes and local talent will be on display in Looking at Our Landscape, a juried community photography exhibition that Crystal Bridges at the Massey has organized as a follow up to Heroes of Horticulture. Residents of Northwest Arkansas are invited to grab their cameras, get outdoors and capture the landscapes that are most meaningful to them – especially those at risk of being lost. Selected entries will be presented in an online gallery, and forty works will be displayed at the Massey. For more information on submitting work visit www.crystalbridges.org.
Transforming Tradition: The Pottery of Mata Ortiz
June 11 – August 29
In the 1950s Juan Quezada, a native of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, discovered ceramic fragments from the Casas Grandes culture that thrived 400 years ago, then vanished. Inspired by these clues from the past, Quezada learned the techniques of this lost tradition and revived pottery production in the region, which now produces some of the world’s finest contemporary ceramics. Both contemporary ollas (pots) and the centuries-old ceramics that inspired the revival will be featured in Transforming Tradition, organized by the Field Museum in Chicago.
Danny Lyon: The Bikeriders
September 9 – October 31
Myth meets reality in this exhibition that focuses on the real easy riders and their life on the road. In 1968, after four years spent riding with the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club, Danny Lyon published The Bikeriders, a seminal work of modern photojournalism. Organized by art2art, this exhibition features Lyon’s photographs of leather-clad bikers racing, riding and relaxing in cafes, bars and hotel rooms across the United States. Excerpts from Lyon’s interviews will accompany the photographs.
David Hockney: Six Fairy Tales
November 11, 2010 – January 7, 2011
The romance, family conflicts and violence in Grimm’s Fairy Tales received a fresh and unsettling interpretation in David Hockney’s Six Fairy Tales (Petersburg Press, 1970). Golden-haired Rapunzel and Rumpelstilzchen’s straw spun into gold are included in the 39 etchings from Hockney’s book featured in this exhibition, along with scenes from other, less familiar tales. Come see how a bubbling pot, a sharp knife and a glass mountain embody the dark magic of the original tales. This exhibition, organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, also sheds light on the women who shared these stories with the Brothers Grimm.
Exhibitions will be accompanied by educational programming, including gallery talks, interactive programs for children and families, documentary films, lectures, public performances and more. For more information visit www.massey.crystalbridges.org or call 479-418-5700.
